Your body deals with pain by producing a related family of chemicals called prostaglandins, which magnify the pain signals being sent to the brain, to make sure you act on the information, i.e., to pull your hand away from a hot stove. Prostaglandins also cause inflammation, swelling and fever, which is one of the body’s defense responses.
While some prostaglandins induce unwanted inflammation, others play a vital role in maintaining healthy tissue, such as mucus that protects the stomach lining and support the function of platelets that are necessary for the clotting of blood. When a medication prevents the protective function of prostaglandins, problems such as an upset stomach, gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers can occur. Inflammatory prostaglandins can be produced by pain causing biochemical systems in the body. A familiar one is the enzyme Cox 2 (short for cyclooxygenase).
